Overclocking is the process of improving or increasing the performance of a computer system by altering certain variables such as voltage levels, operating frequencies, and the frequency or number of processor cores, while staying within thermal and electrical specifications.
The article is about overclocking your CPU with the help of overdrive, also known as dynamic frequency scaling, on AMD platform.
AMD Overdrive (Dynamic Frequency Scaling) is a software-based frequency scaling technology introduced in Ryzen 2000 series of CPUs. This technology is built-in into the silicon and not a BIOS feature.
In short, it dynamically adjusts the clock speed of your CPU based on the current power consumption. Overdrive is more power efficient than the older method of CPU frequency scaling.
With Ryzen, AMD Overdrive is the default frequency scaling technology and there is no need to use a BIOS feature called Overdrive.
Why Overclock CPU?
To increase the performance of your computer, you can either upgrade the processor or the memory. However, you cannot upgrade the memory and processor at the same time, as it will make your system unstable. Therefore, if you are looking to increase the performance of your system, you need to overclock the processor.

How To Overclock CPU With AMD Overdrive
To enable Overdrive on your Ryzen 3000 series CPU, you will need to use the Ryzen Master utility.
- To use the utility, first install the latest version of Ryzen Master from the official website.
- After installing the utility, launch it and click on the “Advanced” tab.
- In the “Advanced” tab, you will see a button called “Enable Overdrive”.
- Now, you will need to set the clock frequency and voltage.
- To set the clock frequency, you will need to enter the desired clock frequency.
- You can also use the overdrive slider to adjust the clock frequency.
- For voltage, you can use the overdrive slider or the “Up/Down” buttons.
- To use the “Up/Down” buttons, click on the “Up” button first.
- Now, you can adjust the voltage using the slider.
- You can use the slider to set the voltage from 0.5V to 1.8V.
- Now, you can adjust the clock frequency and voltage to the desired level.
- To set the desired clock frequency, use the slider.
- Finally, press the “Apply” button to save the settings.
Now, the CPU will automatically use the frequency and voltage settings.
To verify the settings, you can use the “Test” button to check if the settings are working fine.
If the settings are fine, you can now use the CPU to overclock.
To overclock your CPU, first, you need to open the “CPU Settings” tab in the Ryzen Master utility.
- Next, you will need to use the “Power/Performance” tab to set the Overdrive setting to “ON”.
- Now, you will need to set the “Target” setting to “Optimal”.
- Next, you will need to set the “P1” and “P2” settings to the desired level.
- Finally, you can set the “P3” setting to the desired level.
- Now, you can set the Overdrive setting to “ON”.
- You can also set the CPU to the “High Performance” mode to increase the clock frequency even more.
